Overview of helmet requirements and checks

The Greek Police are out in force, checking helmet use among motorcycle riders, passengers, and even folks zipping around on light personal electric vehicles (E.P.H.O.). This campaign’s been rolling for sixteen weeks now, and honestly, it doesn’t seem like they’ll let up anytime soon.

Officers from Traffic Police and other units stop motorcycles, rental services, and delivery workers, keeping a close eye on compliance. They want to see everyone following the helmet regulations and aren’t shy about handing out fines.

Last week alone, police carried out more than 20,000 inspections. That led to nearly 1,800 fines—pretty staggering numbers. Delivery riders, in particular, caught a lot of attention this time around.

Out of those violations, over 1,200 were for motorcycle riders, almost 200 for passengers, and nearly 300 for electric personal vehicle users. There was even one case with an ATV driver tossed into the mix.

Attica saw the most offences, with Crete and the Ionian Islands not far behind. Thessaloniki, Peloponnese, and regions scattered across Macedonia also had their fair share of violations.

The new Road Traffic Code (N. 5209/2025) means business. If you don’t wear a helmet or ignore your passenger’s safety, you’re looking at a €350 fine and a 30-day licence suspension. Passengers without helmets get fined too, and electric vehicle users face smaller penalties. Repeat offenders? The fines just keep climbing.

Police are really pushing for a shift in attitude about helmet safety. They’re especially focused on delivery drivers, but honestly, everyone’s in the spotlight. Protective gear isn’t just a suggestion—it’s the rule, and they’re making sure people get the message.

Four-Year Suspended Sentence for a Motorcyclist from Agios Nikolaos Driving Without a Licence

troxaia

Traffic police in Agios Nikolaos arrested a man who was riding his motorcycle after losing his licence for a previous offence.

They stopped him during a routine check and quickly found out he didn’t have a valid licence.

The case went straight to the Summary Court. The judge found him guilty of driving without a current licence.

He got four years in prison, but the sentence is suspended for three years. There’s also a €2,000 fine on top of that.

That’s a pretty hefty response, but it’s what the current Traffic Code demands.

Driving without a valid licence isn’t just frowned upon—it’s a serious offence with real criminal consequences.

The law’s tough on this to keep the roads safer. They want to make sure people think twice before driving without the right paperwork.

The court’s decision really drives home how important it is to follow the rules if you want to be on the road.

Just because someone lost their licence before doesn’t mean they can just ignore the law. The suspended sentence means he’ll stay out of prison—unless he slips up again during the probation period.
