Tensions are rising in Chania, Crete, as local farmers and livestock breeders have announced a large-scale protest set to begin tomorrow, Wednesday, October 29. The demonstration comes in response to the recent OPEKEPE subsidy scandal, which has left many in the agricultural sector without critical financial support.

During a general assembly held last night at the Chania Workers’ Center, the Livestock Breeders’ Association of Chania decided to escalate their mobilizations with long-term roadblocks on the Northern Road Axis of Crete (BOAK). According to the association’s president, Giannis Verykakis, the farmers will block both directions of traffic near Tsikalaria, between the Mournies and Souda junctions.

Traffic will be completely halted, except for emergency vehicles such as ambulances, police, and fire services. A pre-gathering will take place at noon in Mournies, where farmers will assemble before moving toward the motorway.

“We’re not just talking about a crisis — this is the complete collapse of livestock farming,” said Verykakis. “Without subsidies, farmers cannot cover even their basic expenses. We are fighting for survival.”

Local authorities are urging drivers to avoid the area and seek alternative routes, as significant traffic disruptions are expected throughout the day.
