Newsflash from Tuesday, 28 October 2025:

A tragic incident unfolded on Monday morning, October 27, on the beach of Agia Fotia in Ierapetra, Crete, when a 50-year-old German tourist lost her life after suffering a cardiac arrest shortly after entering the sea.
According to local reports, the woman had just finished eating and decided to go for a swim. Moments after entering the water, she reportedly felt unwell and collapsed, with witnesses rushing to help. It is believed that she ingested a large amount of seawater, which worsened her condition.
Emergency responders from EKAB Ierapetra arrived quickly at the scene and performed CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) on the beach in an attempt to revive her. Despite their heroic efforts and the immediate transfer to the Ierapetra General Hospital, doctors were unable to save her life.
The exact cause of death will be determined following a post-mortem examination at the University General Hospital of Heraklion (PAGNI).
Local authorities have expressed their condolences to the woman’s family, while medical experts again remind beachgoers to avoid swimming immediately after eating, as it can increase the risk of cardiac events and other health complications.
