Fuel Prices Skyrocket: Unleaded Petrol Hits €2.10 as Greek Drivers Face New Economic Strain

Newsflash from Wednesday, 25 March 2026:

Petrol prices are burning

The cost of commuting has reached a breaking point for thousands of motorists in Greece. Recent data highlights a worrying trend as fuel prices continue their upward trajectory, with unleaded petrol now consistently surpassing the €2.10 per liter mark in several regions.

According to Yiannis Mavrakis, President of Gas Station Owners and member of the Panhellenic Federation, the situation has reached a critical stage. In an interview with Radio Crete, Mavrakis noted that the average price for diesel has climbed to €2.10, while unleaded petrol is averaging €2.08, with some stations already charging as much as €2.139.

Diesel Surpasses Unleaded: A Growing Concern

In a rare market shift, diesel prices have overtaken those of unleaded petrol within city centers. This inversion is causing significant distress for professional drivers and logistics companies who rely heavily on diesel for their daily operations. Experts warn that diesel prices could soon hit €2.15 per liter, further squeezing the profit margins of small businesses and increasing the cost of goods.

Relief on the Horizon: The Fuel Pass

To combat these rising costs, the Greek government is set to launch the Fuel Pass application platform next week. This measure aims to provide financial relief to approximately 3.1 million vehicle owners—roughly 3 out of 4 drivers in the country.

Key Details of the Fuel Pass:
* First Payments: Expected within the first ten days of April.
* Budget: A total of €130 million has been allocated for this support measure.
* Income Eligibility:
* Single individuals: Annual income up to €25,000.
* Married couples: Up to €35,000 (plus €5,000 for each dependent child).
* Single-parent families: Up to €39,000 (plus €5,000 for each additional child after the first).

How to Receive the Subsidy

The subsidy will be distributed via a digital debit card that can be used at gas stations, for public transport, or for taxi services. For those who prefer a traditional bank transfer, the option remains available; however, the government has confirmed that those who choose the digital card will receive an increased incentive amount.

As fuel prices remain volatile, this subsidy serves as a temporary “breath of air” for households struggling to keep up with the cost of living. Motorists are encouraged to prepare their tax documentation to ensure a smooth application process once the platform opens.
