Serious concern has been raised in Palekastro, Lasithi (eastern Crete) after a local resident discovered suspected poisoned bait, prompting an immediate response from authorities and animal protection teams.

According to information released by LIFE Against Poison Crete, the incident was reported in early January when a citizen found meatball-like baits (“keftedakia”), believed to contain snail-killing poison, a substance frequently linked to animal poisoning cases. The suspicious items were promptly handed over to the Sitia Police Department, which alerted the competent wildlife and detection authorities.

On January 3, 2026, a specially trained detection dog named Nesi, accompanied by handler Giorgos Chorafas, conducted a thorough inspection of the area. The operation was carried out in collaboration with an Environmental Game Warden and a police officer. Fortunately, no additional poisoned bait or dead animals were found, despite the presence of stray dogs and cats in the vicinity.

Photographic evidence of the recovered bait strongly suggests the use of toxic substances, highlighting the ongoing danger such illegal practices pose to pets, stray animals, wildlife, and public health.

Authorities remind residents that the use of poisoned bait is illegal and punishable by law. Citizens are urged to report any suspicious findings immediately to the police and avoid touching potentially toxic materials.

Community vigilance remains crucial in protecting animals and preventing further incidents.

If you notice anything suspicious in your area, contact local authorities immediately.
