Animal Cruelty Alert: Deadly Poisoned Baits Claim Lives in Limnes

A grim discovery in Lasithi has sparked an investigation after multiple cats were found dead, prompting a search by specialized anti-poison units.

Residents of Limnes, Lasithi, are on high alert following a disturbing wave of animal poisonings. On March 9, a local resident in the Tzanakos area discovered three cats dead outside their home, all showing unmistakable signs of poisoning from ā€œfolesā€ (toxic baits).

The Investigation in Limnes

The severity of the incident led to a formal investigation on March 10. A specially trained detection dog was brought to the village to scour the area for any remaining poisoned baits that could pose a threat to other pets, stray animals, or even local wildlife.

The incident gained public attention after eyewitnesses and local resident Julie Malone shared photos of the deceased animals in the ā€œLIMNES MERAMBELLOU LASITHIā€ Facebook group, warning other pet owners to be extremely cautious.

A Recurring Threat in Rural Crete

Poisoned baits remain a persistent and illegal problem in many parts of rural Greece. These ā€œfolesā€ are often pieces of meat or food laced with highly toxic pesticides or glass, intended to kill stray animals or predators. However, they frequently result in the agonizing deaths of beloved pets and protected species.

Key details of the incident:
* Location:Ā Limnes, Lasithi (specifically the Tzanakos area).
* Casualties:Ā At least three cats confirmed dead.
* Response:Ā Specialized K9 unit deployed to detect further toxins.

What to Do if You Suspect Poisoning

This latest incident serves as a stark reminder for pet owners in the Lasithi region to remain vigilant during walks and to keep a close eye on outdoor animals.

If you find a suspicious substance or a deceased animal:
1. Do not touch itĀ with bare hands.
2. Contact the local policeĀ or the forestry department immediately.
3. Alert local animal welfare groupsĀ to spread the word and prevent further deaths.

Animal cruelty and the use of poisoned baits are serious crimes under Greek law, carrying heavy fines and potential prison sentences. Local authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the person responsible for these baits to come forward.

Dead cats reported in Sopata near Makry Gialos

Two dead cats, probably due to secondary poisoning or a traffic accident, were autopsied by šŸ•ā€šŸ¦ŗ Nessi and Giorgos Chorafas on 9 March 2026 in Sopata near Makry Gialos.

The investigation was carried out after a citizen reported a suspicious find. However, neither the sample nor the dead cats show any signs of poisoned bait having been used in the area. During the investigation, several cats in good condition were sighted in the area.

The Lassithi investigation team of the Crete-Dodecanese Hunting Association was accompanied by federal gamekeepers Giannis Mavrikakis and Giannis Stroumbakis.

The photos were taken by George Chorafas.
