Newsflash from Wednesday, 5 November 2025: Tensions in Crete – Protests Erupt as Israeli Cruise Ship “Crown Iris” Docks in Souda Port.

Early yesterday morning, the Israeli cruise ship Crown Iris arrived at the port of Souda in Chania, Crete, sparking protests from local organizations and activist groups. The vessel, carrying around 2,000 passengers, docked under heightened security measures amid a wave of demonstrations linked to Israel’s ongoing actions in Gaza.

According to local reports (Cretalive), protesters gathered near the port entrance holding banners and chanting slogans in solidarity with the Palestinian people. Police maintained a strong presence to ensure order as passengers disembarked for scheduled excursions around Chania.
The Crown Iris, operated by an Israeli company, has faced similar protests in other Greek ports in recent months — including Rhodes, Volos, and Piraeus — as anti-war demonstrators continue to voice opposition to Israel’s military operations in Gaza (AP News).
Despite the tense atmosphere, no major incidents were reported in Souda. Local authorities emphasized that tourist activity proceeded as planned, while activist groups vowed to continue peaceful demonstrations against what they describe as “normalizing tourism amid war.”
The Crown Iris is expected to continue its Mediterranean itinerary in the coming days, with further port calls scheduled across Greece and Cyprus.
