Newsflash from Monday, 22 December 2025:

The festive spirit in Ierapetra was preserved this weekend thanks to the swift intervention of the Municipal Police, who stepped in to stop vandalism targeting the city’s Christmas decorations.
On Sunday morning, during a routine patrol in the center of Ierapetra, municipal police officers witnessed three minors causing damage to festive installations placed in a public area. Their response was immediate. The officers intervened on the spot, preventing further destruction and safeguarding the city’s holiday décor that brings joy to residents and visitors alike.
The minors were escorted to the Ierapetra Police Department, while their parents were also brought in, in accordance with standard procedure and with the assistance of the Hellenic Police. The case has since been forwarded to the Security Department of Ierapetra, which is examining the incident and assessing whether the minors may be linked to other acts of vandalism reported earlier that night.

A Visible Presence That Makes a Difference
This incident highlights the crucial role played by the Ierapetra Municipal Police in protecting public spaces and municipal property—especially during high-traffic periods such as the Christmas season. Despite operating with extremely limited personnel, the service continues to maintain a steady presence in the city through regular patrols and rapid responses.
In a public statement, the Head of the Directorate of the Ierapetra Municipal Police emphasized that the department currently operates with just three officers, far fewer than what would be required to fully meet the city’s needs. Nevertheless, officers work tirelessly, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to ensure the smooth functioning of the city and the protection of public assets.
Prevention Saves More Than Decorations
Beyond preserving the festive atmosphere, timely intervention has a tangible economic impact. Preventing vandalism reduces repair and replacement costs for municipalities, saving valuable public funds. Well-staffed and properly supported municipal police services can help cities avoid significant expenses related to damage in squares, playgrounds, urban equipment, and other infrastructure.
The Ierapetra case serves as a reminder that active policing in public spaces is not only about enforcement—it’s about prevention, community well-being, and maintaining the character of the city during moments meant for celebration.
As the holiday season continues, the residents of Ierapetra can enjoy the city’s Christmas decorations knowing that, even with limited resources, the Municipal Police are on duty—protecting the festive spirit for everyone.
