Newsflash from Friday, 19 December 2025: Maritime Rescue Off Gavdos – 545 Migrants Saved in Major Early-Morning Operation.

A large-scale rescue operation took place in the early hours of Friday, December 19, off the coast of Gavdos, as Greek authorities safely brought 545 migrants ashore from a single boat that had sent out a distress signal.
According to local authorities, the overcrowded vessel was located in open waters south of Crete after issuing a mayday call. The Hellenic Coast Guard immediately launched a response, reaching the scene and transferring all passengers safely to land.
Officials confirmed that all migrants are in good health. Following the rescue, arrangements were made for their transfer to the area of Agia Galini, where they will receive further care and processing.
This incident highlights the continued pressure of migration flows toward Crete, particularly along its southern maritime routes. Just one day earlier, multiple additional arrivals were recorded across the island, including boats reaching Gavdos and the southern coast of Heraklion, carrying dozens more migrants (a total of four boats carrying 160 migrants).
Authorities remain on heightened alert as arrivals continue, while humanitarian and logistical efforts are ongoing to ensure the safety and dignified treatment of those rescued.
Stay tuned for updates as the situation develops.
