Newsflash from Monday, 6 October 2025.

A British couple has been arrested in Hersonissos, Crete, after being caught on camera stealing a motor scooter in broad daylight — an incident that shocked both locals and tourists in the popular seaside town.
According to a report by Nea Kriti, the suspects — a 34-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman, both British nationals — were identified thanks to security footage and eyewitness accounts. The theft occurred on the morning of Saturday, October 4, 2025, near the port of Hersonissos.
Witnesses described the pair approaching a parked motorcycle casually before the man climbed onto the seat. Despite the woman’s initial hesitation, she soon joined him, and the two rode off, leaving bystanders stunned.
Police acted swiftly, analyzing video evidence and witness statements to identify the suspects. Within hours, officers from the Hersonissos Police Department located and arrested the couple. The stolen scooter, which had sustained some damage, was recovered and returned to its rightful owner.
Authorities confirmed that both individuals face charges of vehicle theft and property damage. They are expected to appear before the Heraklion Prosecutor in the coming days.
The incident has reignited discussions about tourist behavior and property security in Crete’s bustling resort areas, where petty thefts occasionally disrupt the otherwise peaceful holiday atmosphere.
Local Police Praised for Swift Action
The rapid resolution of the case drew praise from residents and local media, who commended the police for their prompt and effective response. The Hersonissos Police Department emphasized that such incidents are taken seriously and that cooperation between citizens and authorities remains key to maintaining public safety.
> “Thanks to the quick coordination of our officers and the valuable help of eyewitnesses, we were able to identify and arrest the suspects within hours,” a police spokesperson said.
Tourism and Crime Awareness
While Crete remains one of Greece’s safest tourist destinations, law enforcement officials continue to remind visitors to remain vigilant and respect local laws. The British Embassy in Athens has also issued general advice urging travelers to secure their belongings and avoid risky behavior that could lead to legal trouble abroad.
