In response to widespread confusion surrounding the new Traffic Code (Κώδικας Οδικής Κυκλοφορίας – K.O.K.), Greece’s Ministry of Transport has issued an official clarification to clear up misconceptions about everyday driving habits.

Recent discussions online suggested that drivers could face fines for drinking coffee, wearing thick jackets, or carrying shopping bags inside their vehicles. However, the Ministry has firmly stated that none of these actions are prohibited under the new regulations.

✅ What the Ministry Clarified

1. Driving with a Thick Jacket
There is no article in the new K.O.K. that prohibits wearing a heavy coat while driving. The Ministry emphasized that no administrative penalties apply for this, as long as the driver maintains full freedom of movement and control of the vehicle.

2. Coffee or Water in the Car
Drivers can safely enjoy their coffee or water while behind the wheel. The use of cup holders or similar accessories is not restricted, provided they do not interfere with safe driving.

3. Shopping Bags on the Seats
Placing supermarket bags or other items on the seats is also permitted. The only requirement, according to Article 36, paragraph 4, is that any load must be securely placed so it doesn’t obstruct visibility, movement, or pose a risk to passengers or other road users.

⚠️ What the Law Actually Says

The relevant provision (Article 18, paragraph 2) specifies that a driver must maintain full freedom of movement to ensure safe operation of the vehicle. This rule existed in the previous version of the K.O.K. and has not changed.

Bottom Line

The Ministry’s message is clear:

**No fines will be issued for drinking coffee, wearing a coat, or carrying shopping bags in your car**, as long as these actions do not compromise safe driving.

Drivers are encouraged to focus on safety and attentiveness, rather than worrying about myths circulating online.
