In a coordinated maritime rescue operation early this week, 67 migrants were safely rescued south of the island of Gavdos, Crete’s southernmost point. The operation was carried out under the supervision of the Hellenic Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC / ΕΚΣΕΔ) and involved the participation of Frontex and the Hellenic Coast Guard.

According to reports from Nea Kriti, the migrants were located approximately four nautical miles south of Gavdos aboard a vessel in distress. A Frontex patrol ship first spotted the boat and immediately initiated rescue procedures. All 67 individuals were safely transferred to the port of Gavdos, where they received medical attention and underwent identification procedures.

This latest rescue follows a similar incident just a day earlier, when 77 migrants—all men—were found on the beach of “Korfos” on Gavdos. They were subsequently transported to the port of Karave, then to Palaiochora, and finally transferred to a temporary accommodation facility in Aghia, Chania.

The Central Port Authority of Chania is conducting an investigation into the circumstances of both incidents, while the vessel used for the latest crossing has been **seized by authorities**.

These repeated rescue operations underscore the increasing migration pressures in the southern Aegean and Libyan Sea regions, as Greece continues to serve as a key entry point for migrants attempting to reach Europe.
