A new rescue operation took place early Thursday morning off the southern coast of Crete, where 79 migrants were located and brought to safety, according to local authorities. The operation was coordinated by the Hellenic Coast Guard, following reports of a vessel in distress in the area.

Swift Response from Local Authorities

The migrants were discovered aboard a small, overcrowded boat that had encountered mechanical difficulties amid rough sea conditions. Rescue teams from the Coast Guard and Port Authority of Rethymno acted swiftly, ensuring all individuals were safely transferred to shore.

Medical teams were on standby to provide immediate assistance, with several people receiving precautionary health checks upon arrival. No serious injuries were reported.

This new operation is part of the wave of migrant arrivals recorded in Crete in recent days.

In the last two days alone, more than 250 migrants have arrived in Ierapetra and Kali Limenes, a fact that is causing great concern and mobilising the island’s port and city authorities.

Context: Ongoing Pressure on Crete’s Coastline

This latest operation follows a series of similar incidents in recent weeks. Earlier this month, 501 migrants arrived in Agia Galini, where local authorities and volunteers worked tirelessly to provide temporary shelter and humanitarian aid before their transfer to reception facilities in mainland Greece.

Officials note that the increasing frequency of such rescues highlights the ongoing challenges faced by both migrants and coastal communities. The Port Authority continues to emphasize the need for coordinated European support to manage the growing number of arrivals.

Humanitarian Efforts Continue

Local organizations and volunteers in Rethymno remain active in providing food, clothing, and medical support to those rescued. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining humane and efficient processes for identification and relocation.

“We are doing everything possible to ensure safety and dignity for everyone rescued,” said a spokesperson for the Rethymno Port Authority.

Looking Ahead

As migration routes shift due to geopolitical and environmental factors, Crete’s southern coast is expected to remain a key landing point. Authorities are preparing for potential future operations, emphasizing readiness, cooperation, and compassion.
