Newsflash from Tuesday, 21 October 2025: Over 100 migrants arrived on Crete’s southern coast this morning, adding to a growing wave of arrivals on the island.
More than 100 migrants arrived on the southern shores of Crete early this morning, marking yet another chapter in the island’s growing humanitarian challenge.
According to local reports, a boat carrying around 97 people was spotted near Agios Ioannis in the municipality of Gortyna, Heraklion. All passengers were rescued safely and are reported to be in good health.
A few hours later, another smaller vessel reached the area of Kalo Limenes, where 28 more migrants were located by the Hellenic Coast Guard.

⚓ Coordinated Rescue Operation
Authorities responded swiftly, deploying teams from the Coast Guard, Police, and volunteer organizations to assist the arrivals. First aid, food, and water were provided on site before the migrants were registered and identified.
Once the process is complete, they will be transferred to Heraklion, where temporary accommodation has been arranged at the old commercial station near the port.
A Growing Challenge for Crete
This morning’s arrivals come just one day after three other boats carrying 156 migrants reached Crete’s southern coastline — near Kalo Limenes and Gavdos.
The island has seen a sharp rise in migrant arrivals throughout 2025, with hundreds reaching its shores in recent weeks. Local authorities and humanitarian groups continue to call for greater national and EU support to manage the increasing flow of people, many of whom are believed to have departed from Libya.
️ Humanitarian Response
Despite the strain on local infrastructure, rescue teams and volunteers maintain that their focus remains on safeguarding lives and ensuring dignified treatment for all arrivals.
Authorities are now investigating the routes and networks facilitating these crossings, as Greece faces renewed pressure from migration flows across the Eastern Mediterranean.
