Newsflash from Tuesday, 4 November 2025: Over 220 migrants arrived on Crete within hours, prompting rescue operations and temporary accommodation in Chania amid rising migration flows from North Africa.

Crete is once again at the center of a growing migration wave, as more than 220 migrants were located within just a few hours along the island’s southern coastline — from Gavdos to Palaiochora, according to local reports (Nea Kriti).
Authorities confirmed that multiple rescue operations were carried out in less than 24 hours. The Hellenic Coast Guard discovered groups of migrants arriving in separate incidents — including 75 people on Gavdos’ Trypiti beach, 22 near Krios in Palaiochora, and dozens more rescued from nearby waters. In total, over 240 individuals were safely brought ashore.
All rescued migrants were transported via Sfakia to the Agyia reception center in Chania, where they are receiving medical check-ups and temporary accommodation. A health team has been dispatched to provide first aid and assess any urgent medical needs.
Local authorities remain on high alert as southern winds continue to facilitate the approach of small boats from North Africa, particularly Libya. This latest surge follows a broader trend — with migrant arrivals to Crete increasing sharply in recent months, echoing similar reports of record influxes earlier this year (eKathimerini).
Officials are urging calm while emphasizing that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure both the safety of the migrants and the security of local communities.
