Traffic disruptions are expected tomorrow, Tuesday, November 18, as residents of Episkopi and nearby villages plan a temporary blockade of the Northern Road Axis of Crete (BOAK) at the Episkopi junction. The protest is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. and will last for a few hours.

According to local organizers, the action aims to draw attention to longstanding safety concerns and the lack of infrastructure improvements in the area. Residents have repeatedly requested the construction of a roundabout, parallel service roads, and safe bus stops—measures they say are essential to prevent further accidents.

“This is not an act of opposition, but a matter of responsibility toward the safety of all citizens,” the residents’ announcement stated. “We cannot remain spectators on a road where danger is a daily reality.”

The group emphasized that their demonstration is peaceful and not directed against anyone, but rather a call for immediate action from authorities. They also appealed for public understanding regarding any temporary inconvenience caused by the road closure.

Residents warn that continued government inaction could lead to tragedies similar to past national road incidents, referencing the Tempi disaster as a reminder of what can happen when safety is neglected.

Local officials from the municipal units of Lappaioi, Nikiforos Fokas (Rethymno), Asigonia (Apokoronas), and Kallikratis (Sfakia) have expressed support for the demonstration, urging the government to prioritize road safety improvements along the BOAK.

Drivers Advised to Plan Ahead

Motorists traveling along the BOAK near Episkopi are advised to avoid the area during the late morning hours on Tuesday and to follow detour instructions provided by local authorities.

The residents’ message is clear: road safety is not a privilege—it’s a right.
