Newsflash from Thursday, 13 November 2025: A shocking poisoning case in Tylissos, Heraklion, has left one dog dead and 20 toxic baits discovered. Police are investigating the criminal act.
A disturbing case of animal poisoning has shaken the local community of Tylissos in the municipality of Malevizi near Heraklion, Crete. Authorities and animal welfare groups are investigating after the discovery of 20 poisoned bait pieces and the death of a pet dog due to toxic substances scattered across the area.
The incident came to light on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, when a specialized detection team — consisting of handler Spyros and his trained detection dog Eka — responded to a report of suspected poisonings. During their search, they uncovered numerous pieces of meat laced with white powder, believed to contain lethal toxins. Tragically, one owned dog was found dead nearby, apparently after ingesting one of the tainted baits.
“This is a shocking and deliberate act of cruelty,” said a local animal welfare representative. “Such poisonings not only endanger animals but also pose serious risks to public safety.”
The Malevizi Police Department has taken over the investigation and is collecting evidence to identify those responsible for laying the poisoned baits. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant, avoid walking pets off-leash, and report any suspicious materials or animal deaths immediately.
Incidents of animal poisoning — known locally as “foletes” — have been a recurring problem in rural Crete, often linked to disputes over hunting grounds or stray animal populations. However, local organizations emphasize that such actions constitute serious criminal offenses under Greek animal welfare law, punishable by imprisonment and heavy fines.
The community of Tylissos remains on high alert as cleanup operations continue, with volunteers and municipal staff working to remove any remaining toxic materials to prevent further harm.
