Newsflash from Friday, 2 January 2026:

Crete welcomed the new year with a strikingly wintry scene, as snowfall covered some of the island’s highest peaks, turning Mount Psiloritis and the White Mountains into breathtaking white landscapes.
The first days of 2026 brought much-needed rainfall across the island, accompanied by snow in the mountainous regions. Mount Psiloritis and the White Mountains stood out in particular, with impressive snow coverage offering spectacular views and reminding residents and visitors alike of Crete’s alpine side.

A White Start to the New Year
The snowfall was widely described as a “good omen” for the year ahead, as locals hope the snowpack will last and contribute to water reserves in the months to come. However, there is also cautious concern that the changing weather pattern—bringing southerly winds and rising temperatures—could reduce the snow cover in the coming days.
Despite this uncertainty, the images captured from the mountains highlight the beauty and power of nature, showcasing a rarely seen winter character of Crete.

Freezing Temperatures on the Lasithi Plateau
The wintry conditions were not limited to the highest peaks. On the Lasithi Plateau, the scene was equally cold, with temperatures dropping to -4°C in the early hours of Friday morning. Frost and icy conditions reinforced the feeling of deep winter across the region.

Nature at Its Most Impressive
From snow-draped ridges to frozen plateaus, the current weather has delivered some of the most impressive winter scenes Crete has seen in recent years. As temperatures are expected to fluctuate, residents are advised to remain cautious in mountainous areas, while many hope the snow will linger just a little longer.
For now, Mount Psiloritis and the White Mountains stand proudly in white, offering a stunning reminder that Crete’s natural beauty shines in every season.
