Newsflash from Thursday, 16 October 2025:
A 14-year-old German boy is fighting for his life in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at the University General Hospital of Heraklion (PAGNI) after a near-drowning incident at Kokkini Beach, Crete.
According to local reports, the teenager lost consciousness while swimming on Wednesday, October 15, prompting immediate concern from nearby beachgoers who noticed him struggling in the water. Acting quickly, they pulled the boy ashore and alerted emergency services.
An EKAV ambulance arrived at the scene within minutes, and paramedics managed to resuscitate the boy after administering first aid. His parents, who were present at the time, informed rescuers that their son has a chronic health condition, which may have contributed to the incident.
Due to the seriousness of his condition and his medical history, doctors at PAGNI decided to admit him to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, where he remains under close medical supervision.
Authorities have praised the swift actions of bystanders and emergency responders, whose quick intervention likely saved the boy’s life.
The hospital has not released further details about his condition, but sources indicate that his situation remains critical as doctors continue to monitor him around the clock.
