Newsflash from Sunday, 12 October 2025: 56 migrants were rescued south of Gavdos in a coordinated operation by Frontex and the Hellenic Coast Guard amid rough seas.
In a dramatic late-night rescue on Saturday, 56 migrants were safely brought to shore after their boat was spotted adrift just two nautical miles south of Gavdos, the southernmost island of Greece.
The operation was coordinated by the Hellenic Coast Guard’s Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) and supported by two Frontex patrol vessels, which escorted the migrant boat through challenging weather conditions, including northern winds reaching 5 Beaufort.
The migrants were transported safely to the port of Karavé, Gavdos, where authorities confirmed that all individuals are in good health. According to local sources, they are expected to be transferred to Crete on Sunday aboard a scheduled ferry and later accommodated at the temporary reception center in Agya, Chania.
This latest incident underscores the increasing migration flows observed in recent weeks across Greece’s southern maritime borders. The Hellenic Coast Guard remains on heightened alert as weather conditions and geopolitical factors continue to drive new arrivals in the region.
Authorities praised the swift and coordinated response of rescue teams, emphasizing that such operations are vital to ensuring the safety of those attempting dangerous sea crossings.
“Every life saved is a reminder of our shared humanitarian duty,” one Coast Guard official noted following the successful operation.
