Newsflash from Saturday, 11 October 2025:
A new migrant arrival was reported early Saturday morning (October 11) in the sea area southeast of Gavdos, the southernmost island of Greece. According to local authorities, a boat carrying 13 migrants was spotted approximately 16 nautical miles southeast of the island.
The Hellenic Coast Guard, assisted by a Frontex vessel, launched an immediate rescue operation. All 13 individuals on board were safely transferred and are now being escorted to the port of Palaiochora, Chania, for further identification and medical checks.
Authorities Respond Quickly
The operation was coordinated by the Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC), which received the alert early in the morning. The swift response ensured the safety of all passengers, despite challenging sea conditions in the area.
Local officials have confirmed that the migrants are in good health and that standard procedures will follow, including registration and temporary accommodation under the supervision of the relevant authorities.
Ongoing Migrant Arrivals in Southern Crete
This incident is the latest in a series of migrant arrivals near Gavdos and southern Crete, a region that has seen increased maritime activity in recent months. The island’s remote location makes it a frequent landing point for small vessels attempting to reach Europe from North Africa.
Greek authorities, in cooperation with Frontex, continue to monitor the area closely to ensure safe rescue operations and prevent maritime tragedies.
