Nationwide 24-Hour Strike in Greece on October 14 to Halt Trains, Ferries, and Public Transport

Newsflash from Sunday, 12 October 2025: Greece faces a 24-hour nationwide strike on October 14, 2025, disrupting trains, ferries, and public transport as unions protest labor reforms.

Greece is bracing for major disruptions on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, as public transport workers, seafarers, and civil servants join a 24-hour nationwide strike in protest against proposed labor reforms.

The strike, organized by the Civil Servants’ Confederation (ADEDY), will run from 00:01 to 23:59, impacting trains, ferries, metro, tram, and other public transport services across the country.

Public Transport in Athens
In the capital, metro, tram, and electric railway (ISAP) services will operate only between 09:00 and 17:00, allowing limited travel for commuters during the day. Decisions regarding bus and trolley services are expected shortly before the strike, but significant interruptions are anticipated.

Train and Suburban Railway Disruptions
The Panhellenic Federation of Railway Workers (POS) has confirmed participation, meaning Hellenic Train will cancel most national and suburban (Proastiakos) routes. Only a handful of emergency services may operate, depending on staffing.

Ferry and Cruise Operations Suspended
Three major seamen’s unions — PEMEN, PENEN, and PEPRN — have announced their involvement, halting all ferry departures from Piraeus, Rafina, and Lavrio. Tugboat crews are also striking, which will affect cruise ships, container vessels, and tankers, as mooring and departure maneuvers rely on tug assistance.

Why Workers Are Striking
The nationwide action comes in response to government-proposed labor reforms that unions argue will extend working hours and weaken collective bargaining rights. Workers are demanding shorter hours, fair wages, and stronger protections against rising living costs.

Travel Advice
Travelers in Greece on October 14 should plan ahead, as public transport, ferry, and train services will be limited or suspended. Passengers are advised to check with airlines, ferry operators, and transport providers for updated schedules and alternative arrangements.

“We are standing up for fair working conditions and the right to collective negotiation,” ADEDY stated in its announcement.
