Newsflash from Sunday, 7 December 2025:
Farmers and livestock breeders across Crete have escalated their protests, taking to the barricades to demand urgent government action on a range of pressing agricultural issues. The movement, which began with roadblocks near Heraklion, is now spreading to key locations island-wide, including the Chania airport and major highways.
The first blockade was set up on December 6th in Peza, Heraklion, followed by a scheduled road closure at Megala Choria, Chania, on December 7th. On the same day, a major rally at the Pancretan Stadium in Heraklion brought together farmers from Heraklion, Rethymno, and Lasithi to coordinate further actions. Livestock breeders have announced plans for a prolonged blockade at Chania’s “Ioannis Daskalogiannis” airport starting December 8th, signaling a firm stance in their demands.

Key demands include the immediate payment of all pending subsidies and compensations, guaranteed minimum prices that reflect actual production costs, reduced production expenses through subsidized fuel and capped electricity rates, and a comprehensive overhaul of the ELGA insurance system to ensure full compensation for losses.
Despite the disruption, protest leaders have urged public understanding, ensuring that vulnerable groups and emergency vehicles will still have passage. The protests come amid a nationwide wave of agricultural demonstrations, with farmers blocking major highways and border crossings to press for stronger state support.
The coming days will be critical as the Panhellenic Committee meets to coordinate a unified national strategy for the protests. The agricultural community’s determination highlights the urgent need for dialogue and solutions to support Crete’s vital farming sector.
