A disturbing case of animal cruelty has shocked the local community of Sitia, Crete, after four dogs — three owned and one stray — were found poisoned near the town’s airport.

According to reports, the animals are believed to have consumed a toxic substance, likely a pesticide commonly used against snails. The incident came to light on October 20, 2025, when members of the Sitia Hunting Association and a specialized detection dog named Nesi conducted an on-site investigation. During the inspection, Nesi located traces of vomit containing residues of the suspected poison, confirming fears of deliberate poisoning.

The affected dogs were immediately taken to a local veterinarian for treatment and remain under medical care. Samples have been collected for analysis, and the Sitia Police Department has been notified. A formal complaint against an unknown perpetrator has already been filed.

Authorities and animal welfare groups are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or bait sightings in the area. The incident has reignited concerns over the repeated use of poisoned baits in Crete, which pose a serious threat not only to pets but also to wildlife.
