A dramatic rescue unfolded on Sunday at Potamos Beach in Malia (Hersonissos), when four swimmers were swept away by powerful waves and found themselves in grave danger. Thanks to the swift reaction of fellow beachgoers, all four individuals were pulled to safety before tragedy struck.

According to local reports from Creta24, the incident occurred on October 12, when rough sea conditions made swimming extremely hazardous. Despite warnings about strong currents common in the area, the swimmers entered the water and were soon caught in the undertow.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as tense and chaotic, as bathers on the shore rushed into the water to help those struggling against the waves. The rescue was carried out without the presence of a lifeguard, since the official lifeguard season ended on October 1st.

Among the four rescued, a 60-year-old German tourist and his grandson were later transferred to the hospital for precautionary medical care. Both are reported to be in stable condition.

The Port Authority of Hersonissos has been informed of the incident, which highlights ongoing concerns about beach safety and lifeguard coverage after the summer season. Potamos Beach, while popular among visitors, is known for its strong currents and has seen several drowning incidents in recent years.

Local authorities are once again urging swimmers to exercise caution and to avoid entering the sea when conditions are rough — especially at beaches without lifeguard supervision.
