Newsflash from Monday, 15 December 2025:
Crete has once again become the focal point of a migrant rescue operation as more than 100 migrants were recently located and safely brought ashore. The incident occurred in the waters south of Heraklion, near the area of Kalo Limani, where a boat carrying approximately 80 migrants was spotted drifting some 43 nautical miles offshore.
The rescue mission was initiated after a Frontex vessel detected the overcrowded boat during routine surveillance. The operation is being coordinated by Greece’s Unified Search and Rescue Coordination Center (ΕΚΣΕΔ), ensuring the safe transfer of the migrants to the port of Agia Galini. Upon arrival, the migrants will undergo the standard registration and reception procedures conducted by the relevant authorities.
This event highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Crete and the broader region amid increasing migration flows across the Mediterranean. Authorities continue to work tirelessly to manage these situations with humanitarian care while maintaining border security.
