Heavy, persistent local rain last turned streets here into small watercourses.
Severe weather struck the island of Crete on Thursday afternoon, unleashing torrential rain that quickly flooded roads and caused widespread disruption across Heraklion and Chania. Within minutes, streets turned into rushing rivers, trapping motorists and prompting emergency responses from local authorities.
⚠️ Sudden Downpour Causes Chaos in Heraklion
According to local reports (Nea Kriti), a powerful downpour hit the mountainous and semi-mountainous areas of Heraklion on Thursday afternoon. Roads such as Heraklion–Voutes and Palaiokastro were quickly submerged, making driving conditions extremely dangerous.
Eyewitnesses described torrents of water rushing through the streets, forcing drivers to stop or abandon their vehicles to avoid hydroplaning or being swept away. In some areas, sections of the road were completely impassable, with small landslides reported in nearby hilly regions.
Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to stay clear of flooded roads, warning that even shallow water can be deceptively dangerous.
Chania Also Hard Hit by Heavy Rain
The storm also battered Chania, where intense rainfall caused flash flooding in several parts of the city and surrounding countryside. Within a short period, local streams overflowed, sending muddy water cascading through streets and agricultural areas.
Emergency services and the Civil Protection Authority remain on high alert, monitoring the evolving situation and ready to intervene where needed.
Emergency Response and Safety Warnings
Local fire brigades and municipal crews have been working tirelessly to clear debris and assist stranded residents. So far, there have been no reports of serious injuries, but several vehicles were damaged, and some properties suffered minor flooding.
Authorities are reminding citizens to:
– Avoid driving through flooded roads.
– Stay indoors during heavy rainfall.
– Follow updates from the Civil Protection Service and local weather alerts.
️ A Reminder of Crete’s Weather Extremes
This latest storm highlights the growing frequency of intense weather events across Greece, often linked to shifting climate patterns. Crete, known for its mild Mediterranean climate, has faced several episodes of flooding in recent years, particularly during autumn and early winter.
Meteorologists warn that more unstable weather could return in the coming days, urging residents to remain cautious.
