Newsflash from Wednesday, 5 November 2025: Thousands of citizens are now facing an impasse with ELTA, the Greek postal service. The situation has sparked intense debate about the possibility of closure.

People are frustrated, and frankly, who can blame them? Many rely on ELTA’s essential services on a daily basis.
Rumours are circulating about what might happen next. Some say closure is inevitable, while others cling to the hope of a last-minute solution.
Uncertainty hangs in the air. Everyone wants answers, but at the moment, we only have questions.
The discussion about ELTA (Greek Post) was quite tense. Many members of the Conservative Party felt blindsided because they knew nothing about the planned closure of the branches.
Smaller towns and rural communities are particularly hard hit. Despite the management’s withdrawal and the postponement of the closures of 158 branches, anger remained high.
The MPs repeatedly emphasised that the postal service is not a normal private company. They demanded that the restructuring project be completely rethought.
Digital Minister Dimitris Papastergiou, ELTA CEO Grigoris Sklikas and Yannis Papachristou from the sovereign wealth fund tried to calm the situation. They gave MPs an insight into the current status and explained the next steps.
Many MPs said that the Post Office was indispensable for older people in rural areas. Without information, they felt ignored.
This is causing particular anger in rural areas. The closures would be particularly painful there.
There were calls for open dialogue with the local authorities. The reduction in the number of branches must be justified in a comprehensible manner, ideally in such a way that the service will ultimately improve.
However, MPs fear that the services will simply be picked apart. The PASOK party rejects the three-month suspension of the closures.
It wants clear information about the €250 million that was provided as a cash injection five years ago. PASOK sees itself as the party of the regions and criticises the fact that promises have been broken.
