Newsflash from Thursday, 6 November 2025: Rethymno Honors the 159th Anniversary of the Arkadi Monastery Holocaust with a Week of Commemorative Events.

Rethymno is preparing to pay tribute to one of Crete’s most defining moments of heroism — the Holocaust of Arkadi Monastery — with a series of commemorative events from November 1–8, 2025, marking the 159th anniversary of the tragedy that became a symbol of freedom and sacrifice for all Greeks.
The Holy Monastery of Arkadi, located 23 km southeast of Rethymno, stands as a national sanctuary in memory of the 1866 uprising against Ottoman rule. On November 8, 1866, hundreds of Cretan rebels, monks, and civilians chose self-sacrifice over surrender, igniting the powder magazine and perishing in a powerful act of defiance that drew the attention of the world.

As Rethymno prepares to honor this 159-year legacy, the week’s commemorations serve not only as remembrance but as a reminder that the spirit of Arkadi — the choice of freedom over fear — still defines Crete and its people.
