Empty Streets: Wave of Shop Closures Reshapes the Heart of Heraklion

The commercial core of Heraklion is facing one of its most difficult periods in recent years, as more and more shops are shutting down permanently. Once-vibrant streets are now dotted with empty storefronts, “For Rent” signs, and business owners forced to walk away from their life’s work.

According to the Federation of Professionals, Craftsmen and Merchants of Heraklion (OEVENH), the combination of soaring operating costs, high rents, rising energy bills, and heavy tax burdens has created unbearable pressure for small and medium-sized businesses. For many, closing their doors was the only option left (source: Daynight.gr).

A Changing Cityscape
– Streets such as Kalokerinou, 1866, Evans, Agiou Mina, and Chrysostomou are seeing a growing number of closed shops.
– Even traditionally busy areas like Averof Street now have long-empty stores.
– The pedestrian street of 1821, despite its recent renovation, has lost many businesses due to steep rent increases after the works were completed.

The result is a city center that increasingly resembles a patchwork of closed shutters and struggling shopkeepers, rather than the bustling commercial hub it once was.

Why It Matters
This wave of closures is not just about empty storefronts—it’s about the shrinking purchasing power of citizens, the loss of local jobs, and the risk of long-term economic stagnation in one of Crete’s largest cities.

What’s Next?
Local business leaders warn that without targeted support measures—such as rent relief, tax incentives, and energy subsidies—the situation is likely to worsen. The fear is that Heraklion’s commercial identity could be permanently altered if this trend continues.

Heraklion’s business community is calling for urgent action to prevent the city center from becoming a landscape of empty shops and fading opportunities.
