The Hellenic National Public Health Organization (EODY) has confirmed the first case of West Nile virus in Crete for 2025. The patient, a man in his 60s from a village in the Heraklion region, was admitted to the University Hospital of Heraklion with symptoms resembling meningitis. After medical tests, it was confirmed that he had been infected with the virus. Fortunately, his condition has since stabilized, and he is now recovering under medical supervision.

According to EODY’s latest report, 91 domestic cases of West Nile virus have been recorded across Greece since the beginning of the year, with 8 fatalities. Of these, 73 patients developed serious complications affecting the central nervous system (such as meningitis, encephalitis, or acute paralysis), while 18 cases were mild or asymptomatic (source: Daynight.gr).

Why Crete Is Now on the Map
This is the first confirmed case on the island this year, highlighting that the virus is not limited to mainland Greece. EODY warns that additional cases may appear in the coming weeks, as the virus typically peaks from late summer into early autumn, when mosquito activity is at its highest.

What You Need to Know About West Nile Virus
– The virus is transmitted through mosquito bites after they feed on infected birds.
– Most people (around 80%) show no symptoms.
– Mild cases may cause fever, headache, muscle aches, or rash.
– Severe cases can lead to neurological complications such as meningitis or encephalitis, especially in the elderly, children, and those with weakened immune systems.
– There is no specific treatment—only supportive care.

Prevention Tips for Residents and Visitors
✔️ Use mosquito repellents, especially in the evening.
✔️ Wear long sleeves and trousers when outdoors.
✔️ Eliminate standing water around homes, where mosquitoes breed.

Public health officials emphasize that prevention is the best defense. With Crete now recording its first case, awareness and protective measures are more important than ever.
