A potentially devastating fire that broke out on Thursday afternoon near the Drakouliares river, between Foinikia and Malades, was swiftly brought under control thanks to the immediate and coordinated intervention of the Fire Service and the Region of Crete.

The Association of Businesses in the Foinikia–Malades Industrial Zone (SYN.E.F.MA) expressed heartfelt thanks to all those involved in the firefighting effort. According to their statement, the rapid mobilization of fire crews, combined with the availability of water trucks from the Region, played a decisive role in preventing the flames from spreading and causing greater destruction (source: Cretalive).

Although the blaze was quickly contained, firefighters remain on site to monitor for possible flare-ups.

A Reminder of Vulnerability
The incident highlighted once again the vulnerability of local communities and businesses to natural disasters, such as wildfires and floods. It also underscored the importance of close cooperation between public agencies, local authorities, and residents in protecting lives, property, and the local economy.

On behalf of all members, SYN.E.F.MA president Savvas Katheris expressed sincere appreciation to the firefighting forces and pledged the association’s readiness to collaborate on initiatives that strengthen the safety and resilience of the area.

Community Spirit in Action: What could have been a much larger disaster turned into a story of effective teamwork and rapid response—a reminder that preparedness and solidarity are key to safeguarding Crete’s communities.
