The Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency has announced the temporary closure of the Samaria Gorge on Friday, October 3, 2025, due to worsening weather conditions in the region of Chania, Crete.

According to updated forecasts from the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY), heavy rainfall and hazardous conditions are expected throughout the day. For safety reasons, both entrances to the National Park will remain closed until further notice.

This short-term closure is part of ongoing safety protocols that have been reinforced in recent years, as the gorge has occasionally been shut down due to extreme weather, heatwaves, or seismic activity (source: Nea Kriti).

Visitors planning to hike the gorge are advised to reschedule their trips and stay updated through official announcements before traveling.

Why This Matters
The Samaria Gorge is one of Crete’s most iconic natural landmarks, attracting thousands of hikers each season. While closures can be disappointing for travelers, they are critical for ensuring visitor safety in a landscape that is highly sensitive to weather changes.

Travel Tip: If you’re currently in Crete and looking for alternatives, consider exploring other nearby trails, archaeological sites, or coastal villages until conditions improve.

Stay Updated
We will continue to provide updates as soon as the gorge reopens. Travelers are encouraged to monitor local news and official park channels for the latest information.
