Heraklion, the vibrant capital of Crete, has recently been “crowned” the dirtiest city in Greece according to an extensive analysis of Google reviews covering cleanliness. The city ranked 11th worldwide in negative cleanliness reports, highlighting growing concerns about public hygiene and waste management in this popular Mediterranean destination.

The study, conducted by Radical Storage, examined thousands of Google reviews from October 2024 through November 2025. It found that 23% of the comments about Heraklion referenced poor cleanliness — a percentage higher than major global cities like New York City, which registered 22.2%. Despite this, Heraklion still fares better than some European cities, including Frankfurt am Main, which has a higher pollution index and worse cleanliness ratings.

While the findings may raise eyebrows, it’s important to note that the methodology relies on public reviews and is not a scientific measurement of pollution or waste levels. Still, the data offers a valuable snapshot of public perception regarding urban cleanliness in Heraklion during 2025.

The ranking places Heraklion among a list of notoriously dirty cities worldwide, including Budapest, Rome, and Las Vegas. However, it also highlights that cities such as Krakow, Singapore, and Warsaw enjoy overwhelmingly positive cleanliness feedback, setting benchmarks for urban management.

Local authorities in Heraklion are now under pressure to address these concerns, improve waste disposal systems, and enhance public spaces to boost both resident quality of life and the city’s appeal to tourists.

As Heraklion continues to attract visitors drawn by its rich history and stunning landscapes, tackling cleanliness issues will be key to maintaining its reputation as a top travel destination in Greece and beyond.
