Demolition work on the promenade near the harbour of Hersonissos.
A long-awaited transformation has officially begun in Hersonissos, as construction works start on the complete redesign of the promenade and land zone of the town’s port. After decades of planning and discussion, bulldozers are now on site, marking the beginning of one of the most important urban regeneration projects ever undertaken in the area.
The project, with a total budget of €8 million, included the full redevelopment of approximately 800–900 meters of the port’s land zone, stretching from the Port Authority building to the Hersonissos Police Department. The aim is to deliver a modern, functional, and environmentally upgraded waterfront that reflects both the history and the dynamic future of Hersonissos.

A Promenade Designed for People
The new promenade will be organized into three distinct zones:
– A frontage zone next to buildings, allowing space for cafés and restaurants to operate outdoor seating.
– A central pedestrian zone, which will function as a promenade and also allow access for emergency and service vehicles when required.
– A green and leisure zone, featuring urban furniture, trees, benches, and modern lighting.
Together, these zones will form a unified promenade of at least 12 meters in width, ensuring accessibility, comfort, and multiple uses for residents and visitors alike.

Respecting History and the Local Economy
Special emphasis is being placed on the protection and showcasing of archaeological finds, including remains of the ancient Roman port, both on land and underwater. Around €3 million has been allocated specifically for archaeological research, in close cooperation with the relevant authorities.
At the same time, the municipality has stressed that the project is being implemented with full respect for local businesses and tourism activity. Clear instructions have been given to ensure that the area remains accessible throughout the construction period, minimizing disruption during the busy season.

Timeline and Vision
The project is funded by the Recovery and Resilience Fund, with a completion deadline set for 2026, while the goal is to have a large part of the promenade ready by summer. Supervision is carried out by the Ministry of Infrastructure’s specialized public works service, ensuring high standards and close coordination on a daily basis.
As works progress, the visual change is already evident. The redesigned promenade is expected to significantly enhance the image of Hersonissos, supporting sustainable tourism development and improving quality of life for residents.
With this flagship project, combined with other planned infrastructure and road works, Hersonissos is steadily moving toward a more sustainable, modern, and attractive future by the sea.
