Many households and pensioners are currently receiving two important payments that provide financial relief. Firstly, many eligible individuals are receiving a rent refund. In addition, numerous individuals are receiving support amounting to £250.

Both payments were announced at the same time to help cushion the rising cost of living. The rent refund is primarily aimed at tenant households.
The €250 job allowance is intended to provide support to pensioners on low incomes in particular.
More than 2.4 million citizens had received financial support by 28 November. The government is paying out a total of €600 million.
Key points:
Measure | Number of recipients | Amount | Payment date |
|---|---|---|---|
Rent refund | 1 million households | Up to £800 + £50 per child | 28 November 2025 |
Bonus payment | 1.4 million pensioners and beneficiaries | £250 | 28 November 2025 |
Tenants who paid for their main residence or student accommodation in 2024 will benefit from the rent refund. The programme runs every year in November.
€250 bonus
The bonus is aimed at pensioners on low incomes, vulnerable elderly people and people with disabilities who receive certain social benefits.
What’s still to come
Further measures from a €2.5 billion package will be introduced in the coming months. More than 5 million people will benefit from this.
These include:
- Tax cuts on direct taxation
- Regular pension increases
- Abolition of the personal difference with higher pension payments
- Increase in the minimum wage and adjustments to public sector salaries
- Extra salary increases for security personnel and civil servants, amounting to more than one additional month’s salary on average
Details on rent refunds
- Maximum amount: £800 per household
- Plus £50 for each child in the household
- Applies to rent payments made in 2024
- Annual payment to help offset rental costs
Other information
Payments always start at the end of the month, usually on the last working day. This year, that falls on a Friday.
The aim is to make everyday life a little easier and reduce the burden of housing costs.

Rent refund: How to get the full amount – step-by-step procedure in E1
From the 2024 tax year onwards, tenants will be able to correct their tax returns using form E1. This is the only way to receive a full rent refund.
The amounts entered in the E1 form are decisive. Anyone who enters incorrect or incomplete data will receive less money back.
Important: Around 1% of those eligible, i.e. around 9,000 taxpayers, must submit a change notification in order to receive the correct amount.
Calculation of the refund
The refund corresponds to 1/12 of the annual rent costs entered in E1. It sounds simple, but mistakes can creep in during everyday life.
Incorrect entry | Consequence |
|---|---|
Monthly rent instead of annual rent | Lower refund |
Rent split between several parties | Reduced payment because the expenses are lower |
Correction via myAADE
You can only make changes online via the myAADE portal:
- Log in: Open your 2024 tax return.
- Select change: Submit amended tax return.
- Check codes: Information in codes
- 811–816 for your main residence
- 817–822 for student accommodation
- Adjust amounts: Change incorrect amounts, save and resubmit the return.
Deadline for changes
You can submit a change notification until 30 December 2025 to receive the correct refund.
Further information
- The system compares the data with the electronic tenancy agreement and the tax return.
- If tenants only lived there for part of 2024, they will automatically receive a lower refund. Only actual expenses count.
Summary in table form:
Step | What to do | Notes |
|---|---|---|

Anyone who misrepresents their annual income will only receive a partial refund. Only by providing correct information can you ensure that you receive the full amount.
The process is conducted online. Unfortunately, those who prefer paper will be at a disadvantage here.
