More than 65% complete, with construction scheduled for completion in autumn 2026. Initial test flights planned for early 2027.

Green infrastructure and jumbo jet take-offs
The new airport project in Crete covers an area of more than 6,000 hectares. The planners have ensured that even large aircraft, i.e. jumbo jets, can take off and land without any problems.
The infrastructure looks quite modern and focuses on environmentally friendly solutions. The aim is to truly achieve sustainable standards.

Construction work is scheduled to be completed by summer 2026. The first test flights are set to take off in the first half of 2027 – naturally including all the necessary safety and technical checks.
The challenge of transformation
The airport could become one of the most important hubs in the Mediterranean. This will give the region a real boost, especially economically.
Such a large-scale project requires new technologies and a great deal of logistics. Private investors and government agencies are working quite closely together here.
The balance between growth, environmental protection and resource use remains a key issue. Modern technologies are expected to help overcome the challenges – sounds ambitious, doesn’t it?
The future in Kastelli
The new airport will give Kastelli a whole new status. Over 15 million visitors could come every year – that’s quite a statement.
This will make Crete much more accessible internationally. Tourism and the economy are likely to benefit greatly from this.
The location between Kastelli and Arkalochori has been cleverly chosen. With the new transport links, the region can grow and develop further.

Green airport
Those responsible for the new terminal are focusing on technical innovations. These include digital baggage systems, smart conveyor belts and modern security technology such as computer tomographs for parcel checks.
A lot is also being done in terms of environmental protection: biological water treatment plants are firmly planned. The airport is set to be one of the most modern and sustainable in the Mediterranean region.

VOAK (North Coast Motorway of Crete)
The airport works closely with the North Coast Motorway of Crete (VOAK). The road connects many cities along the north coast and makes the journey to the airport much easier.
This means faster connections between the airport, Heraklion and other major locations on the island. Sounds like real progress for the region.

The new motorway runs directly in front of the airport terminal.
Papoura Hill
The nearby Papoura Hill is simply part of the landscape. It was taken into account right from the planning stage.
It stands as a landmark. The hill remains protected and is directly integrated into the overall concept of the airport.
This allows the infrastructure to grow while maintaining the environmental balance.
