Newsflash from Tuesday, December 2025:
A passionate nature lover, hiker, and climber lost his life after a prolonged and challenging rescue mission in the rugged Asterousia Mountains of Crete. The 37-year-old man, known by the nickname “Loukos,” was found unconscious in the remote Aba Gorge following an accident during his descent of a waterfall.
The rescue operation, which began on Sunday afternoon and lasted well over a day, involved multiple emergency teams including firefighters, specialized rescue units (EMAK), and forest commandos. Despite the deployment of a Super Puma helicopter, the difficult terrain prevented an aerial extraction, forcing rescuers to undertake a demanding ground mission.

When the rescue team finally reached the injured hiker on Monday afternoon, they discovered he had succumbed to his injuries sustained to his leg and ribs. The man was immediately handed over to emergency medical services but unfortunately could not be revived.
This heartbreaking incident underscores the dangers inherent in exploring Crete’s wild landscapes and the dedication of the rescue teams who risk their own safety to save lives.
Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time.
