A shocking case of domestic violence unfolded in a hotel near Ierapetra, Crete, when a 34-year-old British woman allegedly attacked her estranged husband, nearly causing him to lose his eyesight.
The Incident
According to reports, the couple — British nationals on holiday in Crete — got into a heated argument in their hotel room during the early hours of Thursday, October 16. The situation quickly escalated when the woman, in a fit of rage, threw a mobile phone directly at her husband’s face, hitting him in the eye with force.
Other hotel guests, hearing the commotion, believed that a woman was being assaulted and immediately called the police. However, when officers from the Ierapetra Police Department arrived, they discovered that the husband was the one severely injured.
Serious Injury and Medical Response
The 35-year-old man was initially taken to the General Hospital of Ierapetra, but due to the seriousness of his eye injury and the risk of permanent vision loss, doctors decided to transfer him to PAGNI Hospital in Heraklion for specialized treatment.
Fortunately, after receiving medical care, the man was later discharged and returned to the hotel to care for the couple’s young children.
Police Action
The 34-year-old woman was arrested and remains in custody as authorities continue their investigation into the violent altercation. The case has been classified as domestic violence, and legal proceedings are expected to follow.
A Growing Concern in Tourist Areas
Incidents of domestic violence among tourists have been increasingly reported across Crete, particularly during the summer and autumn months when the island hosts large numbers of visitors.
Local authorities emphasize that domestic abuse is a criminal offense in Greece, regardless of nationality, and that victims — or witnesses — should immediately contact the European emergency number 112 or the local police (100).
Conclusion
What began as a holiday in paradise for this British couple turned into a violent confrontation with potentially life-altering consequences. Thanks to the swift response of local police and medical teams, the situation was brought under control before it escalated further.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder that domestic violence knows no borders — and that help is always available for those who need it.
