Rescue Adventure in Balos: Two Italian Hikers Trapped in Rugged Terrain Saved by Firefighters

An afternoon hiking trip turned into an unexpected adventure for two Italian women in the stunning area of Balos, Crete. The pair — a mother and daughter — became trapped in an inaccessible part of the trail connecting Balos with Falassarna, prompting a swift rescue operation by local emergency services.

The Incident

Late on Friday afternoon, the Fire Service of Chania received an emergency call reporting that two tourists were unable to continue their journey through a steep and rocky section of the popular hiking route. The terrain, known for its breathtaking views but challenging paths, quickly became too dangerous for the women to navigate safely.

The Rescue Mission

Responding immediately, eight firefighters with two vehicles and a specialized team from the 3rd EMAK (Special Disaster Response Unit) headed to the scene. After a coordinated effort, rescuers managed to reach the women and safely escort them out of the rugged area.

Following the rescue, an EKAB ambulance transported the women to Chania General Hospital “Agios Georgios” for precautionary medical checks. Thankfully, both were in good health and suffered no injuries.

A Reminder for Hikers

While the Balos–Falassarna trail offers some of Crete’s most spectacular coastal views, this incident serves as a reminder of the importance of preparation and caution when exploring remote areas. Hikers are encouraged to:

– Check the difficulty level of trails before starting.
– Carry sufficient water, food, and navigation tools.
– Avoid hiking alone or late in the day.
– Inform someone about their planned route and expected return time.

Conclusion

The quick and efficient response by the Chania Fire Service and 3rd EMAK once again highlights the professionalism and dedication of Crete’s rescue teams. Thanks to their efforts, what could have been a tragic event ended safely.

Balos remains one of Crete’s most enchanting destinations — but as this story shows, nature’s beauty often comes with challenges that demand respect and preparedness.

A hiking trip in the scenic Lissos Gorge near Sougia, Chania, had a happy ending after a 55-year-old German tourist was rescued following a minor injury that left her unable to continue her trek.

The Incident

The woman was hiking with a group on Thursday afternoon when she slipped and injured her leg inside the Lissos Gorge — a beautiful but rugged area known for its ancient ruins and wild Cretan landscape. Unable to move further, her fellow hikers immediately called the European emergency number 112 around 4:00 p.m., requesting assistance.

Swift Response by Firefighters

A rescue team of 12 firefighters from the Chania Fire Service was quickly dispatched to the scene. The team located the hiker, stabilized her condition, and carried her to a safe location within the gorge. From there, she was transferred to an EKAB ambulance, which transported her to a nearby medical facility for further evaluation.

Fortunately, her injuries were minor, and she is now recovering well.

A Reminder for Safe Hiking in Crete

Crete’s gorges — including Samaria, Agia Irini, and Lissos — attract thousands of hikers every year. While these natural wonders offer breathtaking views and a chance to experience the island’s raw beauty, they can also pose challenges due to uneven terrain and sudden weather changes.

Local authorities advise all visitors to:
– Wear sturdy footwear suitable for rocky paths.
– Carry water, a first-aid kit, and a charged phone.
– Avoid hiking alone or late in the day.
– Always inform someone of your planned route.

A Happy Ending in Sougia

Thanks to the quick and coordinated efforts of Crete’s rescue services, what could have been a dangerous situation ended safely. The operation once again showcased the professionalism and dedication of the island’s emergency responders, who are always ready to assist both locals and visitors in need.
