Newsflash from Thursday, 12 March 2026:

The Region of Crete made a powerful impression at ITB Berlin 2026, the world’s leading travel trade show, which this year celebrated its milestone 60th anniversary. With a strategic focus on boosting air connectivity, extending the tourism season, and establishing the island as a premier cruise hub, the Cretan delegation engaged in high-level meetings to secure a prosperous year for the island’s tourism industry.
Strengthening Global Connections
Participating as a co-exhibitor with the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO), Crete focused on three main pillars: connectivity, seasonality, and cruise development.
The delegation held pivotal meetings with major industry players, including:
* AIDA Cruises: Discussing the development of “homeporting” in Cretan ports.
* SkyUp & Discover Airlines (Lufthansa Group): Focusing on increasing flight frequencies and expanding the travel window beyond the peak summer months.
According to data from the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Lufthansa remains the strongest carrier for the summer of 2026, and Greece continues to rank among the top three most popular destinations for German travelers.
A Taste of Excellence: European Region of Gastronomy 2026
One of the highlights of the event was the celebration of Crete’s prestigious title as the European Region of Gastronomy for 2026.
To mark the occasion, a special event was hosted at the Greek Embassy in Berlin. Guests, including diplomats and tourism professionals, were treated to authentic Cretan flavors and traditional dances performed by the “Megalonesos” Cretan Association of Berlin. This title serves as a cornerstone of Crete’s promotional strategy this year, highlighting the island’s unique culinary heritage as a primary reason to visit.

Navigating Challenges with a Focus on Safety
Despite the strong upward trend in bookings, the delegation acknowledged the complexities of the current global climate. Kyriakos Kotsoglou, the Vice Governor of Tourism for Crete, noted that while the data shows a “strong trend” for 2026, geopolitical developments in the Middle East remain a concern.
“If the drums of war were not sounding in the Middle East, we would be talking about another year of record-breaking growth,” Kotsoglou stated. He emphasized that the Region’s strategy is now focused on promoting “Safe Crete,” positioning the island as a secure, welcoming, and stable destination for international travelers.
High-Level Representation
The Cretan stand welcomed several dignitaries, including:
* Anna Karamanli, Deputy Minister of Tourism.
* Alexandros Papaioannou, Greece’s Ambassador to Germany.
* Nikoletta Lekanidi, Head of the GNTO office in Germany.
The delegation was led by Vice Governor Kyriakos Kotsoglou, supported by Nikos Alexakis (Director of Tourism), Eleni Vougioukalaki, and Marina Tsaparidi.

Looking Ahead
As ITB Berlin 2026 concludes, the message from Crete is clear: the island is ready to welcome the world with its world-class gastronomy, improved accessibility, and a commitment to providing a safe, high-quality experience for every visitor.
Whether you are coming for the ancient history, the award-winning beaches, or the Mediterranean diet, Crete in 2026 is a destination that promises to tell a story 60 years in the making.
