Cruise ships back in Santorini from Sunday

The cruise season in Santorini is set to begin with the arrival of five ships carrying around 6,000 passengers.

Following a joint ministerial decision, cruises will be allowed to dock under specific conditions, which address industry concerns about the impact of ongoing seismic activity in the region.

The relevant government departments have confirmed that cruise ships will be permitted to anchor only at designated moorings off the port of Athinios and during specific time slots to ensure that coastal ferry services remain unaffected.

Celestyal will be the first cruise line to resume services in Santorini.

Based on the schedules from the Thira Port Authority, it is expected that at least five cruise ships will arrive on the island the week following the announcement, with a total of 35 scheduled for April.

The first ship to reach Santorini is from Celestyal and is set to host approximately 1,200 passengers on Sunday, 23 March.

Addressing the situation in Santorini, the president of the Association of Cruise Ship Owners and Maritime Entities, Georgios Koubenas, highlighted during a general assembly the local community’s concerns due to recent seismic events.

He stated that these occurrences have understandably raised worries among both residents and visitors.

Ongoing communication with all relevant parties is in place to ensure smooth operations for cruise ships, particularly regarding the ancient port, which serves as a base for the cable car.

Looking ahead, the Association of Cruise Ship Owners and Maritime Entities plans to address various issues affecting Greece’s cruise sector throughout 2025.

The president noted that their focus is on improving services for both ships and management companies in light of contemporary developments, including the impact of climate change.

Upcoming Cruise Schedule

– 23 March, Celestyal, 1,200 passengers
– At least five cruise ships in the next week
