A shocking case of animal cruelty has once again stirred anger in Crete. In the area of Kerameia, Chania, a German Shepherd was found late Wednesday night, October 9, lying on the roadside in a pool of blood after being shot in the head and spine with a hunting rifle.

According to a statement from the Animal Welfare Association of Chania “The Protection of Animals”, residents discovered the severely injured dog on the road to Malaxa, near Agia Paraskevi. The animal was still alive but in critical condition, suffering from massive cranial and spinal injuries.

Witnesses immediately called the police (100) and sought veterinary help. The dog had no microchip, though it was wearing a collar, suggesting it may have had an owner. After multiple calls, veterinarian Sia Sfouggataki responded, and the animal was transported by Sophia Mazanaki to the Saridaki Veterinary Clinic around 11 p.m.

Despite emergency treatment and consultations with other veterinarians, the dog succumbed to its injuries a few hours later.

“They Shot It Point-Blank and Let It Die in Agony”

In its public statement, the animal welfare group condemned the act as “an execution-style killing”, noting that the dog had been shot at close range in the face with a shotgun, causing the jaw to shatter and multiple brain injuries.

“He was shot point-blank with a shotgun and left to die in agony. The cruelty we face daily is beyond comprehension,” the group said.

They also highlighted that Kerameia and surrounding areas have seen repeated cases of extreme animal abuse in recent years — yet no perpetrators have been held accountable.

“The same ‘known unknowns’ continue their criminal actions undisturbed, and no one ever sees anything,” the statement added, urging the police to fully investigate the case.

A Call for Justice and Awareness

Animal welfare organizations across Crete are demanding stronger enforcement of animal protection laws and harsher penalties for offenders. They emphasize that such acts not only reflect deep cruelty but also pose a danger to the community.

Citizens are encouraged to report any information that could help identify the shooter or prevent similar acts in the future.
