The large wildfire in Asiites was brought under control after a pretty intense firefighting response.

Three helicopters were up there, hammering the fire from the air, while ground teams hustled to keep the flames from reaching nearby homes.

Authorities sent out early warnings to residents, just in case things got worse.

Photos and video footage really show the scale of the whole thing, and yeah, the fire looked massive before they managed to contain it.

Key details:

  • Area affected: Asiites
  • Air support: 3 helicopters
  • Ground forces: Firefighters and support teams
  • Residents: Warned via emergency messages

A large wildfire broke out in a remote area near a tiny village. The strong winds made things rough for everyone involved.

Firefighters got there fast, bringing a ton of resources—over fifty people, loads of vehicles, and some pretty specialized foot teams. Three helicopters kept circling overhead, dropping water again and again.

Local authorities and regional services jumped in too, coordinating with water trucks and handling logistics as best they could. The fire tore through farmland, mostly olive groves and vineyards, but, thankfully, homes weren’t in danger.

Fire crews didn’t pack up right after containment—they stuck around, just in case. Early warnings went out to residents through emergency alerts, urging caution and advising folks to stay ready for instructions.

Local leaders made the trip out to see things for themselves as crews worked to get the fire under control.

Sunday, 22 June 2025: Forest fire near Ierapetra

The fire broke out shortly after 1:30 p.m. local time, and 50 firefighters were mobilised to extinguish it with two groups of hikers from the 3rd EMODE, 15 vehicles and two helicopters.

At 2:00 p.m., the emergency number 112 also sounded, urging citizens to remain vigilant and follow the instructions of the authorities.

The work of the fire brigade was extremely difficult due to strong winds at the site.

The use of aircraft was also crucial. They left shortly after 3:00 p.m. Firefighters remain on site to monitor the situation and watch for any possible flare-ups.

It is worth noting that Rethymno, Heraklion and Lasithi are at level 4, or ‘very high,’ on the fire risk forecast map for today, Sunday, while Chania is at level 3, or ‘high.’
