From 1 May 2025, it will only be possible to visit the Kourtali Gorge for a fee.

The management procedures for the Kourtaliotiko Gorge and its surrounding area are advancing rapidly following the publication of the relevant government gazette. This gazette includes detailed information about the coverage area, the visitor season, which spans from 1 May to 31 October, as well as entry and exit points for visitors.
Importantly, it specifies the entrance fee, alongside exemptions for certain groups. The fee structure is set at €5 per visitor for a single day, €15 for an annual pass, and €3 for students.
Exemptions from this fee apply to various categories of individuals. Permanent residents of the municipality of Agios Vasilios and nearby municipalities do not need to pay. Additionally, minors under 18 years old, seniors above 65, persons with disabilities and their companions, unemployed individuals, and large families (having three or more children) are exempt.
Tour guides, mountain companions, security personnel, military members, researchers, and volunteers also qualify for free entry. Furthermore, visitors can enjoy free access on specific days, such as 21 March, in recognition of International Day of Forests, 21 May for European Natura 2000 Day, and 5 June, marking World Environment Day.
The mayor, Giannis Tatarakis, has expressed satisfaction with the swift progress of the implementation processes and the timely publication of the government decree. He maintains regular communication with the relevant environmental authority and its managing director, Konstantinos Triantis, to ensure that further details concerning the management of the area will be published in due course.
Tatarakis has remarked, “We are making every effort to ensure that all necessary stages proceed as swiftly as possible to achieve an organised and effective management of the natural resources in the Kourtaliotiko region. We have a contractual agreement with the environmental agency, completed a study on the area’s carrying capacity, and received the gazette regarding the entrance fee.
In the near future, we will also obtain the details on management from the authority.”
According to the published gazette, a significant portion of the revenue generated from entrance fees will benefit the local municipality. Specifically, 70% of the income will be allocated to the municipality, tasked with maintaining visitor-related infrastructure such as cleanliness, security, signage, visitor information areas, and waste collection.
The remaining 30% will go to the environmental authority for initiatives focused on preserving and promoting the region’s biodiversity.
