Best time to go hiking in Crete
The right time of year is crucial for great hikes on Crete. I explain when the weather is best and which months are particularly suitable.
Climate and weather conditions
Crete has a Mediterranean climate with mild, humid winters and hot, dry summers. The mountains have a strong influence on the weather.
In winter, it can be cold and snowy at high altitudes. Hiking is then often difficult.
Summer brings extreme heat. From June to August, temperatures often rise above 30°C. This makes long hikes strenuous and dangerous.
Spring and autumn offer more pleasant conditions. The temperatures are milder and the landscape is green.
Recommended months
The best months for hiking in Crete are
– April to mid-June
– September to October
Nature is in bloom in spring. Temperatures are usually pleasant between 15°C and 25°C.
Autumn attracts with warm, stable weather. The sea is still warm for swimming after the tour.
It is not too hot or cold during these months. The paths are dry and easy to walk on.
I do not recommend July and August. The heat makes hiking very strenuous.
Important tips for hiking on Crete
Safe and enjoyable hikes on Crete require the right equipment, preparation and respect for nature. I share my most important advice for unforgettable tours on the island.
Equipment and preparation
Good hiking boots are a must on Crete’s rocky terrain. I recommend ankle-high models with a non-slip sole. A sun hat and sun cream protect you from the strong Mediterranean sun.
I pack the following in my rucksack:
– At least 2 litres of water per person
– High-energy snacks
– First aid kit
– Map and compass
Before every tour, I find out about the route, difficulty and weather conditions. In summer, I start early in the morning to avoid the midday heat.
Safety guidelines
I never hike alone and share my route plans with others. I walk carefully on narrow paths and stay alert. I avoid exposed peaks when there is a risk of thunderstorms.
My mobile phone is always charged. I memorise the number of the emergency services (112). In remote areas, I take a whistle with me.
If I’m exhausted or injured, I prefer to turn back. There is no shame in cancelling a tour.
Rules of behaviour in nature
I respect Crete’s unique nature and wildlife. I always take rubbish with me and throw it in the bins provided. I leave plants standing so that others can enjoy them too.
On hiking trails, I stay on the marked path. That way I protect the surrounding vegetation. If I come across goats or other animals, I watch them from a distance.
In nature reserves, I find out about special rules in advance. Open fires are usually prohibited. Instead, I use a camping cooker for meals.
