A devastating fire broke out in the early hours of Monday morning, leaving a car rental agency in the Gournes area of Crete in ruins. The blaze, which occurred along the Heraklion–Moires National Road, resulted in the total destruction of a significant portion of the company’s fleet, causing massive financial losses.
A Night of Destruction
The fire reportedly started around 12:50 AM in a parking area where numerous rental vehicles were stationed. Due to the flammable materials and the close proximity of the vehicles, the flames spread with alarming speed, creating a high thermal load that lit up the night sky.
Local authorities were alerted immediately, and the Fire Service launched a major operation to contain the inferno before it could reach neighboring businesses.
The Extent of the Damage
The aftermath of the fire is a scene of absolute devastation. According to official reports:
* 18 vehicles were caught in the blaze.
* 11 cars were completely incinerated, leaving nothing but charred metal frames.
* 7 cars sustained extensive damage from the heat and flames.
The economic impact on the local business is described as “catastrophic,” as a large percentage of their operational fleet was wiped out in just a few hours.
Firefighters Battle the Blaze
The Heraklion Fire Department dispatched 4 fire engines and 10 firefighters to the scene. The crews faced difficult conditions due to the intense heat and the risk of the fire spreading to adjacent commercial properties.
Through a coordinated effort, firefighters managed to bring the fire under full control by approximately 3:00 AM, preventing what could have been an even larger disaster for the industrial zone.
Investigation Underway
As of now, the cause of the fire remains unknown. The Investigation Department of the Fire Service has launched a formal inquiry to determine the exact circumstances behind the outbreak. Investigators are currently examining all possibilities, including technical failure or external factors.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly fire can devastate local businesses. For now, the community of Gournes watches as the business begins the long process of assessing the damage and looking toward recovery.
