The old Greek proverb calls March “Pentagnomos” (five-minded) for its unpredictable nature, and this week, Crete is seeing exactly why. From sudden hailstorms to rare waterspouts and the eerie arrival of African dust, the island’s weather is currently a whirlwind of extremes.
If you are living in or visiting Crete over the next few days, here is everything you need to know about the shifting conditions.
A Week of Weather Extremes
The island has already seen a dramatic shift in conditions. On Wednesday afternoon, the skies literally “opened up” over Eastern Crete. Significant rainfall and heavy hailstorms were reported in Kaminaki and across the Lasithi Plateau.
Similar phenomena were recorded in the Heraklion hinterland, specifically between the areas of Charakas and Praitoria. Meanwhile, residents in Rethymno were treated to a rare and dramatic sight: a large waterspout forming off the coast, captured by locals from the city’s higher vantage points.
The Forecast: Wind, Rain, and Cold
According to current meteorological data, the “unsettled” trend is set to continue. Here is what to expect over the coming days:
* Heavy Gusts: Expect windy conditions with Southwesterly winds reaching speeds of 20 to 30 mph.
* Temperature Drop: While daytime highs may reach 18°C, the mercury is expected to dip to 13°C at night, bringing a winter-like chill back to the island.
* Thunderstorms: There is a persistent 30% chance of rain, with localized thunderstorms likely in mountainous regions.
The “African Dust” Phenomenon
Adding to the atmospheric chaos, an episode of African dust transport is currently evolving across the island. This phenomenon often creates a hazy, orange tint in the sky and can affect air quality, particularly for those with respiratory sensitivities. The combination of dust and rain can also lead to “mud-rain,” so you might want to hold off on washing your car for a few days!
Stay Safe and Prepared
With the weather turning “unpredictable and indecisive,” locals and visitors are advised to:
1. Secure Outdoor Furniture: High wind gusts can easily displace light items on balconies or terraces.
2. Dress in Layers: The transition from a sunny afternoon to a cold, windy evening can be rapid.
3. Check Travel Schedules: High winds can occasionally affect ferry schedules or small aircraft flights.
March in Crete is a reminder that spring doesn’t always arrive quietly. Stay tuned for further updates as we track these changing conditions across the island.
