Despite constant warnings, four people drowned and numerous others were rescued within 24 hours on the beaches of Crete.

Overview of the situation on Crete’s beaches
Two people—aged 94 and 55—lost their lives at the beaches of Tsoutsoura and Ammoudara. Rescue teams tried to help, but both incidents ended in tragedy.
The 94-year-old was found unconscious at Tsoutsoura. Sadly, he drowned before anyone could revive him.
At Ammoudara, a 55-year-old man had trouble while swimming and drowned, too. Lifeguards performed CPR for nearly an hour, but it just wasn’t enough.
These deaths push the total number of drowning deaths in the Heraklion region this year to 11. Seven of the victims were men, and four were women.
Most of these tragedies happened on beaches in the Hersonissos municipality. It’s a rough statistic—one that’s hard to ignore.
Last year, drowning cases dropped by 23% nationwide. Still, local numbers remain stubbornly high.
Rescue teams keep warning about the risks, especially on popular tourist beaches. Strong currents don’t make things any easier for swimmers.
Key points to consider:
- Victims include both older adults and those in midlife.
- Drownings keep happening, even when help arrives quickly.
- Swimming right after eating might raise the risk, at least in one case.
- Beaches with strong currents really demand extra caution.

Tragedy at Red Tower: 85-Year-Old Swimmer Dies – Fourth Drowning

This marks the fourth drowning on Crete in just 24 hours. Three happened in Heraklion, and one in Episkopi, Rethymno.
Not long after, another elderly man nearly drowned at Karteros beach. Quick-thinking swimmers and the lifeguard pulled him out, and he made it to the hospital conscious.

Rescue operation in Rethymno: Coast Guard freed two people from rocky area – taken to hospital

The Coast Guard in Rethymno jumped into action when two American tourists got stuck on some rocks near Gerani Bay. This all went down Tuesday afternoon and, honestly, it must have been a stressful scene for everyone involved. Rescue teams didn’t waste any time.
A swimmer who happened to be nearby helped the 28-year-old woman get to shore. Paramedics then took her by ambulance to the local hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, the 30-year-old man was still in the water. Coast Guard officers rescued him using their vessel and moved him over to a passenger ship called “Kako Agori.”
The passenger ship and a rescue craft named “Ariadni” both got involved. After picking him up, they brought him back to the port of Rethymno.
He headed to the hospital for medical care, too. Both tourists got quick medical attention after the ordeal.
Authorities stayed on high alert the whole time, making sure nothing else went wrong. If you want more details, check out this rescue operation in Rethymno.
