Ten Dogs Poisoned in One Event on Crete

In Petrokséfali, a small village between Matala and Mires, something awful happened recently. Ten dogs were discovered dead—or barely hanging on—after eating poisoned bait left around the area.

The whole community was shaken. People talked about the pain these animals must’ve gone through, and honestly, it’s hard not to feel for them.

Locals started worrying, not just for stray dogs but for their own pets too. You could sense the anxiety; folks were suddenly on edge, wondering if things would get worse.

To try and get control of the situation, they brought in Mr. Nistikakis, a specialist. He showed up with Eka, his detection dog, and got to work combing the village for any trace of poison.

Turns out, Eka sniffed out a chunk of poisoned meat—proof that dangerous bait was still lurking somewhere out there.

The area’s animal welfare group is urging anyone who knows something to speak up. They want to stop whoever’s behind this before more animals get hurt.

Dog Tied to Car and Dragged Along the Road

A man in Karditsa on the mainland was arrested after tying a dog to his car and dragging it down the road. This happened on 9 May 2025, with the dog fixed to the car’s tow hook and pulled for what sounds like a disturbingly long stretch.

The animal suffered awful wounds and obvious trauma during the ordeal. It’s honestly hard to imagine what would drive someone to do something like that.

A passing driver saw what was happening and called the police right away. Officers from the Karditsa Police Department managed to arrest the man on 11 May.

He’s now facing charges for violating laws meant to protect companion animals. The speed at which authorities acted is at least something to note here.

The dog is under veterinary care for serious injuries. Despite everything, the president of the local Animal Welfare Society says the animal is still friendly and open to contact—dogs really are remarkable sometimes.

The suspect has been hit with administrative fines and was brought before the Karditsa Misdemeanour Prosecutor. Legal proceedings are underway, but who knows how far this will go in court.

Police say they’re still investigating. The whole thing raises tough questions about animal cruelty and whether laws in the region are actually working.
